My New Blog, The Blasphemous Homemaker

I have started a new blog. Partly because I don't have enough half-finished projects so I wanted to add more to my plate. And partly because googling homemaking blogs made me want to throw up. I believe in homemaking, and I believe in being a stay at home mother whenever possible. But these quotes are eye-gougingly insulting and disheartening.

First, here's the link
http://blasphemoushomemaker.blogspot.com/

Secondly, feast your eyes on these exact quotes taken directly from the world of homemaking blogs.

"There is a myth, within our own churches and homeschooling circles, It spans denominations and generations. It has the potential to be more destructive than feminism as it threatens to destroy from the inside out, and it goes something like this:

“A girl should be raised to be a Christian. A girl should not be raised to be a homemaker.”
The truth is:
  • God made women for men (1 Corinthians 11:9)
  • Women were created as helpmeets for husbands (Genesis 2:18)
  • The older women are to teach the younger to be keepers at home (Titus 2:5)
  • All women will need homemaking skills, even the unmarried working women."

The only part of any of that I agree with is the last sentence. Everyone, INCLUDING BOYS AND MEN, need to know how to cook, clean, organize, budget, repair broken things, and run a household. I met missionaries who had no idea how to cook a meal outside of Ramen and macaroni and cheese, always ran out of money halfway through the month, and hadn't even packed their own suitcases. No one is doing their sons any favors by not teaching them homemaking skills.

"Those of us with daughters have quite a job before us!  We are to train them for their highest calling to be wives and mothers someday! "

Because my friends who didn't marry until they were in their thirties were useless wastes of God's time!

"I am raising homemakers! I am not raising independent, I can do everything men can do, career oriented ladies. I am raising, God-fearing, modest, virtuous, HOMEMAKERS!"

You can't be a homemaker and be independent! It's biblically impossible!

"I am raising precious homemakers, Proverbs 31 ladies…not feminists…not independent…not I can do it all type of women. God doesn’t like those types.(I added the bold) He loves a humble, modest, fully dependent on Him, lover of her family type of woman. He called her a VIRTUOUS WOMAN. I have no interest in teaching my girls to “go for it all” and sprinkle Jesus on top. If you are an “independent” mother, your daughters will take on after you. They are learning how to be a woman from you! WHAT exactly are you teaching them?"

Ummmm.....that a homemade meal is healthier and more frugal than a prepackaged one or fast food? That if they separate out their laundry the colors won't run and they will last longer? That eggs can be replaced in a baking recipe with 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed mixed with three tablespoons of water? I don't understand the question.

"Avoid lust at all costs. Don’t put yourself in a position where you are vulnerable to men or which you may cause them to lust."

Because men are out of control beasts incapable of looking at a woman's shoulder or thigh without becoming a sex monster. We should probably outlaw male OB/GYNs. In fact we should take a cue from the  Middle East and make women-only hospitals and clinics. Also, we should swim in our dresses. Also, ballerinas are whores.

"“…train the young women to be sane and sober of mind (temperate, disciplined) and to love their husbands and their children, To be self-controlled, chaste, homemakers, good-natured (kindhearted), adapting and subordinating themselves to their husbands, that the word of God may not be exposed to reproach (blasphemed or discredited).”  Titus 2:4-5, Amplified Bible"

I too can quote the Bible.

"1 Corinthians 7:1-2... It is good for a man not to marry. But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. (NIV)"

If you really want to raise your daughters to please God, they should be nuns.

"Leviticus 15:19-20: "When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening. Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean."

Are you teaching your daughters to wash their couches and chairs every time they menstruate? If you aren't, you're not doing your duty to God. I expect him to judge you. Harshly.

"Deuteronomy 22:5:  A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this."

I've noticed a lot of these submissive homemakers wearing pants. God doesn't just dislike independent women, ladies. HE DETESTS YOU IN PANTS.

"Leviticus 19:19:  "Do not mate two different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread."

Time to throw out the cotton-hemp cloth diapers. While you're at it, companion planting IS A SIN.

"Deuteronomy 12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in 13 that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely,[b] both its people and its livestock. 16 You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. That town is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt, 17 and none of the condemned things[c] are to be found in your hands."

Technically, now that I'm posting this, you're supposed to come and kill every living thing in Bellingham. WHAT ARE YOU TEACHING YOUR DAUGHTERS? Clearly not to obey God if you aren't including righteous genocide.

"So what about submission?  Well, the answer is really the same.  There are many places where Christians are advised to submit to each other.  In fact, in the sentence just before the famous Ephesians 5:22 (Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.) we find this:

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21
It’s a general call for Christians to submit to each other.  The fact that it comes immediately before the instructions to wives ought to make it blazingly clear that it is not the special province of women to be submissive to their husbands, it is an instruction for all Christians in their dealing with each other." If we're picking and choosing which scriptures we're going to take literally, then let me share with you the ones I actually believe.

"1 John Chapter 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Now I'm no big city lawyer, but I'm certain that for every scripture I can come up with that says God is love, someone else can come up with one that says what God detests. That's why there are so many denominations, my friends. But since these mothers have the audacity to declare to me what kind of woman God likes and doesn't like, I will stand boldly and tell you GOD LOVES EVERYONE. Those scriptures that say God is peace, God is love, charity is the pure love of Christ? THOSE ARE THE TRUE ONES. I know this because these are the ones that are universal among almost all religions. These are the truths that resonate in the most hearts and bring about the most family and community togetherness and harmony.

"Truth is neither Hindu nor Muslim, nor Buddhist nor Christian! Truth is one, homogeneous, eternal substance. The follower of the religion of Truth walks on the path of light, peace, wisdom, power and bliss.

Man forgets all about his religion on account of ignorance, or lust for power and greed. He has become irreligious. So he has come down to the level of a brute. He has lost all sense of morality. He does havoc. He creates mischief. He stabs, loots, and burns houses. The law of the jungle prevails.
Many preach Buddhism, but no one gives up desires and Himsa (as opposed to Ahimsa). Many preach Christianity, but no one practices love and forgiveness. Many preach Islam, but no one recognizes the brotherhood of man. Many preach Hinduism, but no one realizes the Divinity in all. Preaching has become the livelihood of men, while practice has become their object of scorn.

Hence the world is wicked, not for want of truth, nor on account of religions; but, alas, it is wicked for the lack of true followers of these ideals and religions.

What is needed is proper education of the followers of all religions. Place the practical tenets of their own religion before the followers of that religion, and devise ways and means of enabling them to express these tenets in their daily life. Without practice, idealism creates fatalism in man. Unless knowledge alters one's life, it is useless. Selflessness and love are not creeds to be taught, but ideals to be exemplified, demonstrated and radiated. Therefore, let everyone practice his own religion and strive to attain the goal. Let religion create saints and Yogins, rather than Mandirs (Hindu temple), Masjids (Mosque) and Churches."

THE UNITY THAT UNDERLIES ALL RELIGIONS, By SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA

Everyone is entitled to raise their children according to their own religious beliefs in America. You will be raising your children to believe I am wrong. I am going to raise my children to believe you are wrong. Men CAN be homemakers. Women CAN be providers. Homemaking and parenting ARE amazing, sacred responsibilities, but Atheists, Buddhists, Muslims, Unitarians, and Pagans do it just as well with just as much dedication.

Creating a functional, loving home is a universal need. And if there is a God, he or she wants ALL of their children to be happy and peaceful, not just the ones who follow only a specific subset of the Judeo-Christian bible. If he exists, he doesn't dislike me because I'm a feminist. He likes me because I'm his daughter. Period.

  1. *snort* Looking at your new blog, you are definitely the opposite of the blogs you mention. I have to agree, many of those sentiments would drive me batty too. But then again, I have fully identified myself as being atheist, or at the very least, naturalist. One of those things I'm finally figuring out about myself so the whole concept of submitting and doing things for god just sort of has me rolling my eyes though I know and try to respect that there are those out there who are totally happy with that path. I just know that it's not for me and it will never be for me.
